An off-grid system is sized from what the building actually uses over a winter day, not from a roof area, so the battery bank and the array are quoted together. A charge controller, an inverter and usually a backup generator are part of the package. Travel and barge or trail access to a remote site is a real cost line on most Ontario cottage jobs.

Every row names its source

What does an off-grid system cost by component?

These off-grid solar figures rest on 2 independent published sources across 19 rows. Each row quotes the sentence its own source used, and nothing here is an average of several.

Nineteen rows, the longest table on this site. The ten sharing a per system unit mix whole builds with the individual lines inside them, which is why that scale runs from a monitoring display up to a large rural property. The battery bank scale beneath it is where most of the money in an off-grid design actually sits.

Solar panels, supply onlyPanels only, monocrystalline, with nothing else included. The source's installed figure of $0.80-$1.20/W covers wiring and connections but still NOT mounting.$0.35–$0.65per watt (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Solar panels, installedIncludes wiring and connections but explicitly EXCLUDES mounting, which the source prices separately at $600-$8,000 depending on system size.$0.80–$1.20per watt (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Inverter-charger, mid-size system (3 to 5 kW)A 3,000-5,000W unit suited to a family home and most loads. The source warns that motor loads such as a well pump, air compressor or electric stove draw 3-5 times normal wattage at startup, which is what forces the size up.$1,500–$3,500per unit (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Inverter-charger, large system (6 to 10 kW)A 6,000-10,000W unit for a large home with heavy loads.$3,500–$7,000per unit (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Charge controller, mid-size systemA 60-80A MPPT controller for a 3-6 kW array. MPPT rather than the older PWM type, which the source says harvests less from the array.$400–$900per unit (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Wiring, disconnects and safety equipment, full-size systemCovers all DC and AC wiring, conduit, breaker panels, fuses, disconnects and grounding. The source says this is typically 8-15% of total system cost and rises sharply where the array sits a long way from the battery room.$2,000–$6,000per system (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Backup generator integration, automatic transfer switch and wiringThe transfer switch and integration wiring only, from the LARGE property scenario (10-15 kW); the generator itself is a separate $3,000-$8,000 in the same source. The source's point is that a generator lets you size the battery bank smaller, which is where the saving comes from.$2,000–$4,500per system (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026
Installation labour, cabin system2 to 3 days of labour on the cabin scenario. Labour is one of the two things the source says genuinely varies by province, along with site access.$2,500–$5,000per system (CAD)Off Grid Solar System Canada, Off-Grid Solar System Cost Canada 2026

How the parts of this job fit together

Three off-grid builds, and the battery bank sitting inside each one

The source behind this page prices three whole scenarios and then prices the battery bank inside each one separately. Set side by side, the bank is most of what separates a weekend cabin from a working farm.

These are worked scenarios published Canada-wide, not Ontario quotes. The same source adds a labour premium for southern Ontario and a much larger one for the north, and says labour and site access, not equipment, are what genuinely vary by province.

What do the terms on this page mean?

Three words a off-grid solar quote will use without explaining.

Days of autonomy
How long the battery bank can carry the property with no solar production at all. Every bank priced on this page is sized for two to three days.
MPPT charge controller
Maximum power point tracking, the controller type that harvests more from an array than the older PWM design, which is why the sources here price it as standard.
Inverter-charger
A single unit that both inverts battery DC to household AC and charges the bank from a generator. Motor loads such as a well pump draw three to five times normal wattage at startup, which is what forces its size up.

What drives the price?

Size, site access and the condition of what is already there move off-grid solar pricing more than anything else in Toronto. Each factor below is drawn from the sources above, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • Daily energy use, which sets the battery bank, the single largest line at $550 to $800 per kWh installed
  • How many days of autonomy you design for, the difference between a 15 kWh bank at $9,000 to $14,000 and a 40 kWh bank at $16,000 to $28,000
  • Array size, priced at $0.80 to $1.20 per watt installed, which is cheap relative to storage
  • Inverter-charger capacity, from $1,500 to $3,500 at 3 to 5 kW up to $3,500 to $7,000 at 6 to 10 kW
  • Whether a generator is integrated, at $2,000 to $4,500 with an automatic transfer switch
  • Site location, with a 10 to 15 percent labour premium in southern Ontario and 25 to 45 percent in the north
  • Balance of system, at $2,000 to $6,000 for wiring, disconnects and safety equipment on a full-size build

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

HST at 13 percent, an ESA Notification of Work filed before the job starts, and a municipal permit that differs city by city are the three Ontario rules that change the number on a quote. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle changes the specification.

  • Ontario labour carries a premium. Off Grid Solar System Canada adds 10 to 15 percent for southern Ontario and 25 to 45 percent for northern or remote Ontario against its national figures, and describes Ontario as having strict permitting with a large installer market that keeps competition high.
  • Off-grid means no local distribution company and no net metering. There is no grid connection to apply for, no connection impact assessment and no bill credit, which is the whole point of the design and also why the battery bank has to be sized properly.
  • The electrical work is still regulated. Wiring in Ontario is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority, where the minimum fee for a residential notification is $88, and ESA wiring and licensing fees rose 1.9 percent effective 1 April 2026 (SurgePV).
  • Ontario HST is 13 percent. On a $40,000 off-grid build that is $5,200, and it applies to equipment as well as labour.
  • Ontario winters set the design. Short December days and multi-day cloud cover are what push family-home battery banks from 15 to 25 kWh up to 25 to 40 kWh, a difference of roughly $7,000 to $14,000 in the bank alone.
  • Remote access costs money before any equipment arrives. Northern and island sites carry the 25 to 45 percent labour premium and often a barge, boat or winter-road logistics cost on top.

How can I pay less?

You can keep off-grid solar costs down without cutting the parts that matter. These are the levers GTA homeowners actually use, each tied to a real number above.

  • Cut the load before you size the system. Every kWh a day you remove takes several kWh out of the battery bank at $550 to $800 per kWh installed.
  • Add panels rather than battery. Modules are $0.80 to $1.20 per watt installed against $550 to $800 per kWh for storage, so extra array is the cheaper way to cover short Ontario days.
  • Keep a generator in the design. At $2,000 to $4,500 for integration it is far cheaper than sizing the battery bank for the worst week of the winter.
  • Be honest about seasonal use. A summer cabin can run on $10,000 to $15,000 of equipment where a full-time home needs $20,000 to $67,500.
  • Build modular so the bank can grow. Adding kWh later at $550 to $800 each is easier than replacing an undersized bank.
  • Get quotes from installers based near the site. Northern and remote Ontario labour carries a 25 to 45 percent premium and travel time compounds it.

How did we research these numbers?

Every off-grid solar figure above was re-checked against its own source in August 2026: the number has to appear in that document, in a sentence about the same job, or the row came off. Here is what the 2 surviving sources say.

  • The two Canadian sources we could verify disagree sharply, so we widened rather than picked. Off Grid Solar System Canada puts a small cabin at $14,050 to $24,150 and a family home at $36,200 to $67,500. Volts.ca puts the same two categories at $10,000 to $15,000 and $20,000 to $35,000. Read a cabin as roughly $10,000 to $24,150 and a full-time home as roughly $20,000 to $67,500.
  • The gap is mostly battery sizing. Volts.ca sizes a family home bank at 15 to 25 kWh for $9,000 to $14,000, while Off Grid Solar System Canada sizes it at 25 to 40 kWh for $16,000 to $28,000. A bank sized for three cloudy winter days in Ontario costs far more than one sized for a summer weekend.
  • Storage is the biggest single line in any off-grid build. At $550 to $800 per kWh installed for lithium iron phosphate, the battery bank alone is often more than the panels, inverter and labour combined.
  • Panels are the cheap part. Off Grid Solar System Canada prices modules at $0.35 to $0.65 per watt supply-only and $0.80 to $1.20 per watt installed, which is a fraction of the $2.42 to $3.50 per watt a grid-tied Ontario system costs, because grid-tied pricing carries permitting, utility interconnection and a different class of inverter.
  • Off-grid systems are usually oversized on purpose. Adding panels is cheap relative to adding battery, so a well-designed Ontario system leans on extra array to cover short winter days rather than on more storage.
  • Almost every off-grid build in Ontario keeps a generator. Integration with an automatic transfer switch and wiring is $2,000 to $4,500, and it is what lets the battery bank be sized sensibly instead of for the worst week of the year.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an off-grid solar system cost in Ontario?

Sources vary widely, so plan on roughly $10,000 to $24,150 for a small cabin and $20,000 to $67,500 for a full-time family home. Off Grid Solar System Canada puts a 1.5 to 3 kW cabin at $14,050 to $24,150 and a 5 to 8 kW family home at $36,200 to $67,500, while Volts.ca gives $10,000 to $15,000 and $20,000 to $35,000 for the same two categories. Southern Ontario adds 10 to 15 percent to labour and northern Ontario 25 to 45 percent.

Why is off-grid so much more expensive than grid-tied solar?

The battery bank. Storage runs $550 to $800 per kWh installed, so a family-home bank of 25 to 40 kWh is $16,000 to $28,000 on its own. A grid-tied system uses the grid for that job, which is why it costs $2.42 to $3.50 per watt while an off-grid build of the same array size costs far more.

What size battery bank does an Ontario off-grid home need?

Published designs range from 15 to 25 kWh, at $9,000 to $14,000, up to 25 to 40 kWh, at $16,000 to $28,000, for a full-time home. The higher figure buys autonomy through Ontario's short winter days and multi-day cloud cover. A seasonal cabin is usually 10 to 15 kWh, or $6,500 to $10,000.

Do I still need a generator with off-grid solar?

Most Ontario builds keep one. Integration with an automatic transfer switch and wiring costs $2,000 to $4,500, which is much cheaper than adding the 10 to 20 kWh of battery it would take to ride out the same bad week at $550 to $800 per kWh.

What do the individual components cost in an off-grid build?

Panels are $0.35 to $0.65 per watt supply-only and $0.80 to $1.20 per watt installed. An inverter-charger is $1,500 to $3,500 at 3 to 5 kW or $3,500 to $7,000 at 6 to 10 kW. A charge controller for a mid-size system is $400 to $900. Wiring, disconnects and safety equipment run $2,000 to $6,000, monitoring $750 to $1,200, and labour $2,500 to $5,000 on a cabin or $6,000 to $12,000 on a family home.

Does off-grid solar in Ontario involve net metering or utility fees?

No. An off-grid system has no connection to a local distribution company, so there is no net metering application and no connection charge. The electrical work is still regulated by the Electrical Safety Authority, where the minimum residential notification fee is $88, and 13 percent HST applies to the whole build.

Questions to ask your installer

  1. What load did you size this system for, and what happens if we go over it?
  2. How many days of poor weather can the battery carry before a generator runs?
  3. How does the design handle short winter days and snow sitting on the array?
  4. Who does the electrical work, and will it be inspected?
  5. What maintenance does the battery need, and can we do any of it ourselves? Off-grid cost breakdown
