A home battery quote is built from three things: the usable storage in kilowatt hours, the inverter it pairs with, and how much of the house it is wired to back up. Whole-home backup needs more panel work than a single critical-loads subpanel. Retrofitting onto an existing array usually costs more than fitting a battery at the same time as the panels.

Every row names its source

What does a home battery cost by capacity and backup scope?

These solar battery storage figures rest on 5 independent published sources across 12 rows. Each row quotes the sentence its own source used, and nothing here is an average of several.

Twelve published bands carrying ten different units between them, which is the finding here rather than a formatting problem. A battery quoted per kWh, per five kWh module, per installed unit and as an add-on to a solar system are four different measurements, and only rows sharing a unit can honestly be set against each other.

How the parts of this job fit together

The same battery costs different money depending on when you buy it

One named installer publishes both numbers for the same 13.5 kWh unit: what it adds to a solar system going in around it, and what it costs fully installed on its own. Setting the two columns side by side is the only way to read either figure correctly.

  1. Added to a solar install

      $8,500–$24,000

per system, CAD, before incentives, Solar X Canada, Home Battery Storage Ontario 2026

    • The same installer's narrower band

      $13,000–$22,000

per system, CAD, before incentives, Solar X Canada, Home Battery Storage Ontario 2026

Both columns are named installers publishing their own prices, not a market survey. The left column is stated by its source as the added cost against an equivalent solar-only system, so it is not a standalone price for the same hardware and the two columns are not meant to meet.

What do the terms on this page mean?

Three words a solar battery storage quote will use without explaining.

Usable capacity
The kilowatt hours a battery will actually deliver, which is less than the figure on the label. Prices quoted per kWh on this page are per usable kWh.
LFP
Lithium iron phosphate, the cell chemistry in most home batteries sold in Canada. Sources on this page rate it best for cold weather because it carries no freeze risk.
Critical-loads subpanel
A second breaker panel carrying only the circuits you want kept alive in an outage. Backing up the whole house instead needs more electrical work and costs more.

What drives the price?

Size, site access and the condition of what is already there move solar battery storage pricing more than anything else in Toronto. Each factor below is drawn from the sources above, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • Usable capacity in kWh, which at $700 to $2,000 per kWh installed drives most of the price (Green Building Canada)
  • Whether the battery goes in with a new solar array or as a retrofit, since add-on pricing runs $13,000 to $17,000 for a Powerwall 3 against $19,000 to $24,000 installed standalone
  • Product choice, from $8,000 to $14,000 for a modular Growatt APX HV to $19,000 to $24,000 for a Tesla Powerwall 3 in Ontario
  • Modular versus single-unit design, where Enphase IQ Battery 5P modules run $8,500 to $11,200 per 5 kWh and let you start small
  • Hybrid inverter requirements, since a Solis hybrid inverter plus Renon battery is quoted as a $9,500 to $11,000 package rather than a battery alone
  • How much of the house you want backed up, because a critical-loads subpanel and transfer equipment are separate electrical work
  • ESA notification and inspection, and 13 percent HST on the whole invoice

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

HST at 13 percent, an ESA Notification of Work filed before the job starts, and a municipal permit that differs city by city are the three Ontario rules that change the number on a quote. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle changes the specification.

  • Battery work is electrical work, so it is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority by a licensed Electrical Contractor. The minimum fee for a residential ESA notification is $88 (Electrical Safety Authority), and ESA wiring and licensing fees rose 1.9 percent effective 1 April 2026 (SurgePV).
  • Ontario HST is 13 percent and several installer price lists are quoted before it. Xolar states its battery add-on figures of $13,000 to $17,000 are before HST, which is about $1,690 to $2,210 of tax on that line alone.
  • A battery does not change how net metering works. Ontario's roughly 60 local distribution companies are all required to offer net metering, and exported power is credited against your electricity bill rather than paid out to you (SurgePV). A battery's value comes from shifting your own consumption and from backup during outages, not from selling power.
  • Backup capability depends on the wiring, not just the battery. Whole-home backup needs the panel work sized for it, and a critical-loads subpanel is a separate electrical line item that is not always inside a headline battery price.
  • Provincial and utility programs for storage change, and eligibility rules can restrict grid export. Confirm current terms with your installer and your local distribution company before signing.

How can I pay less?

You can keep solar battery storage costs down without cutting the parts that matter. These are the levers GTA homeowners actually use, each tied to a real number above.

  • Compare quotes per kWh of usable capacity. The Canadian band is $700 to $2,000 per kWh installed, so a $24,000 quote on a 13.5 kWh battery is at the very top of the market and worth challenging.
  • Put the battery in during the solar install rather than after. Add-on pricing for a Powerwall 3 is $13,000 to $17,000 against $19,000 to $24,000 for a standalone Ontario installation.
  • Consider modular storage if the budget is tight. A Growatt APX HV starts around $8,000 and an Enphase IQ Battery 5P module is $8,500 to $11,200, against $19,000 or more for a single large unit.
  • Back up a critical-loads subpanel instead of the whole house. Fewer circuits means less capacity and less electrical work in the quote.
  • Ask for nameplate and usable capacity in writing. Solar Guide's range of $7,000 to $20,000 for a nominal 10 kWh unit shows how far identical labels can sit apart.
  • Confirm whether the quote is before or after 13 percent HST. On a $20,000 battery that is $2,600.

How did we research these numbers?

Every solar battery storage figure above was re-checked against its own source in August 2026: the number has to appear in that document, in a sentence about the same job, or the row came off. Here is what the 5 surviving sources say.

  • Battery pricing is the least settled number in Ontario solar, and the two sources here are not measuring the same thing. For a Tesla Powerwall 3, Solar X Canada quotes $19,000 to $24,000 fully installed in Ontario, while Xolar quotes $13,000 to $17,000 before HST as the ADD-ON against an equivalent solar-only system. An installed price and an add-on premium are different quantities, so the gap between them is not a disagreement about cost. Both are installers quoting their own work.
  • Part of that spread is what the number includes. An add-on price assumes the crew is already on site wiring a solar array, so mobilisation, permit and inverter work are carried by the solar job. A standalone retrofit into an existing house pays for all of that again.
  • Per-kWh pricing is the fairest way to compare quotes. Green Building Canada puts installed Canadian battery cost at $700 to $2,000 per kWh. At the bottom of that band a 13.5 kWh Powerwall would be about $9,450 and at the top about $27,000, which brackets every whole-unit figure we found.
  • Modular systems are cheaper to start and cheaper to size correctly. Solar X lists the Growatt APX HV at $8,000 to $14,000 for 5 to 30 kWh and the Enphase IQ Battery 5P at $8,500 to $11,200 per 5 kWh module, against $19,000 to $24,000 for a single 13.5 kWh Powerwall 3 installed.
  • Solar Guide's Canada-wide figure for a typical 10 kWh unit is $7,000 to $20,000, a three-fold spread on identical nominal capacity. Chemistry, usable versus nameplate capacity, continuous output rating and whether a backup subpanel is included all sit inside that range.
  • A battery roughly doubles the cost of a residential solar project. Solar X prices 8 kW of solar plus a Powerwall 3 at $35,900 to $45,100, and Xolar prices solar plus battery on 5 to 12 kW systems at $30,000 to $46,300 before HST, against $19,400 to $28,000 for an 8 kW array on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home solar battery cost in Toronto in 2026?

Installed home battery storage in Ontario runs $8,500 to $24,000 depending on brand and capacity, with the common mid-market band at $13,000 to $22,000 according to Solar X Canada. Measured per unit of capacity, Green Building Canada puts installed Canadian battery cost at $700 to $2,000 per kWh.

What does a Tesla Powerwall 3 cost installed in Ontario?

Two Ontario installers publish figures, and they are measuring different things. Solar X Canada quotes $19,000 to $24,000 fully installed. Xolar quotes $13,000 to $17,000 before HST as an add-on to a solar install, which is the premium over a solar-only system rather than the whole cost of the battery. Ask which of the two a quote in front of you is, because the numbers are not comparable as they stand.

Is it cheaper to add a battery with the solar install or later?

With the install. Xolar prices a Powerwall 3 as a $13,000 to $17,000 add-on when a crew is already wiring the array, while Solar X quotes $19,000 to $24,000 for an Ontario installation on its own. Doing it later means paying twice for mobilisation, permits and inverter work.

How much does solar plus battery cost together in the GTA?

Solar X Canada prices 8 kW of solar plus a Tesla Powerwall 3 at $35,900 to $45,100 before incentives, and Xolar puts solar plus battery on 5 to 12 kW systems at $30,000 to $46,300 before HST. That is roughly double the $19,400 to $28,000 an 8 kW array costs on its own.

Does a battery earn me money through net metering?

No. In Ontario net metering credits exported power against your electricity bill rather than paying you for it, and every one of the province's roughly 60 local distribution companies must offer it. A battery's value is in shifting your own consumption to cheaper hours and in keeping the house running during an outage, which is why capacity is priced at $700 to $2,000 per kWh rather than by what it might earn.

Can I start small and add capacity later?

Yes, with a modular system. The Growatt APX HV covers 5 to 30 kWh for $8,000 to $14,000 installed and Enphase IQ Battery 5P modules are $8,500 to $11,200 per 5 kWh, so you can size for critical loads now and expand. Single-unit products like the 13.5 kWh Powerwall 3 have to be bought whole.

Questions to ask your installer

  1. Will this battery run the house in an outage, or only shift stored power to the evening?
  2. Which circuits move onto the backup panel, and what gets left unpowered?
  3. Can the array recharge the battery while the grid is down?
  4. Where does the battery mount, and what does that space have to meet?
  5. What is the battery warranty, and what voids it? Storage pricing, sourced

Which other costs should I check before I commit?
