Toronto installers price a rooftop system by its size in kilowatts, then adjust for the roof it has to sit on. Panel and inverter tier, roof pitch and height, how many separate roof faces the array is split across, the age of the electrical service, and the permit and inspection paperwork all move the final number. The table below prices each of those parts separately.

Every row names its source

What does a rooftop solar system cost, part by part?

These solar panel installation figures rest on 4 independent published sources across 9 rows. Each row quotes the sentence its own source used, and nothing here is an average of several.

Nine published bands, and they do not all measure the same thing. Five price a whole system, three give a rate per watt installed, and one is a municipal permit fee. Each unit gets its own scale below, because a per watt figure and a per system figure sitting on one axis compare nothing.

How the parts of this job fit together

What is already inside a per watt quote, and what arrives on top of it

Ontario's per watt figure is not a bare equipment price. One of the sources behind the table states exactly what it covers, and the rest of this page names the lines it does not.

  1. Inside the per watt figure

as the source that publishes it states

    • Equipment and installation

      $2.42–$3.50

per watt installed (CAD), Solar Calculator Canada, Ontario Solar Calculator (2026)

    • Permits and ESA approvals

    • A 25-year warranty

  2. Quoted on top of it

every one of these is named elsewhere on this page

    • The municipal building permit

Toronto prices a solar collector system over 5 square metres. Mississauga adds an online administrative fee on top of its minimum.

      $214.79–$244

per permit (CAD), Solar Energies in Canada, Solar Panels Ontario Cost Guide (2026)

    • An electrical service upgrade, where the panel is too small

An older panel may need upgrading before it can carry the array.

    • Tree removal or trimming, where the roof is shaded

    • The utility's connection impact assessment

The amount differs between Toronto Hydro, Alectra and Hydro One, and is not published here.

    • Thirteen percent HST

One named installer quotes its per watt and system figures explicitly before tax.

The left column is one source's own account of what its Ontario per watt figure covers. The right column is every line this page names elsewhere that such a figure does not. Neither column is a complete quote, and no figure appears in either that is not a row in the table above.

What do the terms on this page mean?

Three words a solar panel installation quote will use without explaining.

Cost per watt
The installed price of a system divided by its DC capacity in watts. It is the only figure that lets you compare a 5 kW quote against a 12 kW one, because the per-watt rate falls as the array gets bigger.
Net metering
An arrangement where your utility credits you for surplus power you export and offsets it against what you draw later. In Ontario a system on a net metering agreement is not eligible for the provincial rebate.
ESA Notification of Work
The filing a licensed Electrical Contractor must make to the Electrical Safety Authority before solar work begins in Ontario. It is not the same thing as the municipal building permit.

What drives the price?

Size, site access and the condition of what is already there move solar panel installation pricing more than anything else in Toronto. Each factor below is drawn from the sources above, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • System size in kW, which sets most of the bill: $12,000 to $17,500 at 5 kW, $19,400 to $28,000 at 8 kW, $24,000 to $35,000 at 10 kW
  • System size, since every source here prices solar per watt and the per-watt rate itself falls as the array gets bigger
  • Roof pitch, height and covering, which change crew time and racking, and whether snow-rated mounting is specified
  • Shading, where tree removal or trimming may be needed before the array can be sized properly
  • Panel technology, since Green Building Canada prices thin-film at $1.70 to $2.40 per watt, polycrystalline at $2.00 to $2.80, monocrystalline at $2.40 to $3.50 and building-integrated PV at $3.00 to $4.50 per watt
  • Electrical service condition, since an older panel may need upgrading before it can carry the array - Superior Power Electric puts a 100 to 200 amp upgrade in Ontario at $2,800 to $5,000 including the ESA permit and inspection
  • Permits and interconnection, including an ESA Notification of Work, a utility connection impact assessment that varies by distributor, and a municipal building permit listed at $214.79 in Toronto against a $244 residential minimum in Mississauga

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

HST at 13 percent, an ESA Notification of Work filed before the job starts, and a municipal permit that differs city by city are the three Ontario rules that change the number on a quote. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle changes the specification.

  • Every solar PV installation connected to the electrical system in Ontario needs an ESA permit, filed as a Notification of Work by a licensed Electrical Contractor through esasafe.com before work begins (SurgePV, Ontario solar compliance). The minimum fee for a residential notification is $88 (Electrical Safety Authority), and for a typical residential PV job under 10 kW the notification plus inspection totals about $260.
  • ESA wiring and licensing fees rose 1.9 percent effective 1 April 2026 (SurgePV), so a quote written before that date may understate the permit line.
  • The City of Toronto requires a building permit for PV installations larger than 5 square metres, with processing of roughly two to three weeks (SurgePV). Solar Energies in Canada lists the Toronto fee at $214.79 for a solar collector system over 5 square metres and Mississauga at a $244 residential minimum plus a $50 online administrative fee.
  • Ontario HST is 13 percent. Xolar quotes its per-watt and system figures explicitly before HST, so confirm whether a competing quote is tax-in or tax-extra before comparing two numbers.
  • Grid connection runs through your local distribution company, not the province. All roughly 60 Ontario LDCs are legally required to offer net metering, and the application (Form C for 10 kW and under, Form B above 10 kW) goes in after the ESA Certificate of Inspection (SurgePV). Net metering is a credit on your electricity bill for exported power, not a payment from the utility.
  • The utility also charges a connection impact assessment on a residential solar connection, and the amount differs between Toronto Hydro, Alectra and Hydro One. The per-distributor figures this guide carried came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages and are no longer published. Ask your installer which distributor serves the address and what that distributor charges.

How can I pay less?

You can keep solar panel installation costs down without cutting the parts that matter. These are the levers GTA homeowners actually use, each tied to a real number above.

  • Get three itemised quotes and compare them per watt, not per system. Ontario sources put installed solar at $2.40 to $3.50 per watt, so a $30,000 price on an 8 kW array is above that band and needs explaining line by line.
  • Size the array as large as your roof and consumption justify in one go. Fixed costs (permits, ESA notification, crew mobilisation) do not shrink with the array, which is why 5 kW systems cost so much more per watt than 10 kW systems.
  • Ask what the quote excludes. Service entrance upgrades, tree work and snow-rated mounting are the common change orders on a Toronto solar job and are cheaper to price before signing than after. This guide no longer publishes figures for them, because the source that carried all three has deleted its Canadian pages.
  • Deal with the roof first if it is near end of life. Removing and reinstalling an array later is a second mobilisation you would be paying for twice.
  • Confirm whether the price is before or after 13 percent HST. On a $25,000 system that difference is $3,250, which is larger than the entire gap between two competing installers.
  • Check the current provincial and utility programs before signing, since eligibility rules and application timing can change what you actually pay.

How did we research these numbers?

Every solar panel installation figure above was re-checked against its own source in August 2026: the number has to appear in that document, in a sentence about the same job, or the row came off. Here is what the 4 surviving sources say.

  • This guide used to open by saying Toronto is the most expensive place in Ontario to install solar, on the strength of one source's regional table. That source has deleted its Canadian pages, so the regional breakdown cannot be checked and is no longer published here. What is still sourced is the Ontario-wide picture: Solar Calculator Canada puts the provincial average at $2.42 to $3.50 per watt including permits, ESA approvals and warranties, and Solar Energies in Canada gives $2.40 to $3.50 per watt installed. Neither separates the GTA from the rest of the province.
  • Per-watt sources broadly agree in the $2.40 to $3.50 band. Solar Calculator Canada gives $2.42 to $3.50, Solar Energies in Canada gives $2.40 to $3.50, and Green Building Canada gives $2.40 to $3.50 for monocrystalline panels nationally, with Ontario at $2.42 to $3.05.
  • One source sits well outside that band. Xolar, an Ontario installer, publishes $2.10 to $4.10 per watt before HST and prices a 5 kW system at $19,100 to $20,300, where the aggregator guides put a 5 kW system at $12,000 to $17,500. We list both rather than pick one. The likely explanation is that installer pricing on small systems carries fixed costs (permits, ESA work, crew mobilisation) that do not shrink with array size.
  • Small systems cost more per watt than large ones. That is why a 5 kW system at $12,000 to $17,500 is not simply half of a 10 kW system at $24,000 to $35,000, and why quotes for a 4 kW array often look poor value next to an 8 kW array on the same roof.
  • Published per-watt figures usually bundle equipment, racking, labour, permits and ESA approval. Xolar's breakdown of a typical Ontario job is 35 to 40 percent panels, 20 to 25 percent inverters, 20 to 25 percent racking and mounting hardware, and 15 to 20 percent labour, logistics and permits. Solar Energies in Canada's split of an $18,000 system is similar, at roughly 20 percent for permits, engineering, utility paperwork and ESA work.
  • The national median figure this guide quoted for a 7.5 kW system came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages, so it has been removed. The whole-system figures that remain are Ontario ones: $12,000 to $17,500 for 5 kW and $24,000 to $35,000 for 10 kW before incentives, both from Green Building Canada, and $19,400 to $28,000 for 8 kW from Solar Calculator Canada.

Frequently asked questions

How much does solar panel installation cost in Toronto in 2026?

Ontario-wide, installed residential solar runs $2.42 to $3.50 per watt according to Solar Calculator Canada, which says the figure includes equipment, installation, permits, ESA approvals and 25-year warranties. Solar Energies in Canada gives $2.40 to $3.50 per watt for the same thing. In whole-system terms that is roughly $12,000 to $17,500 for 5 kW, $19,400 to $28,000 for 8 kW and $24,000 to $35,000 for 10 kW before incentives. We no longer publish a separate Toronto band: the only source that broke Ontario down by region has deleted its Canadian pages, so that number cannot be checked.

Why is solar more expensive in Toronto than the rest of Ontario?

We can no longer show you that it is. The single source that published an Ontario regional breakdown, and the labour-rate and inspection-demand explanation that went with it, has deleted its Canadian pages. Rather than keep a figure nobody can open, we have removed it, and we have not substituted a number from anywhere else. Every Ontario source still standing on this page quotes the province as one market at $2.40 to $3.50 per watt. If a Toronto premium exists, this guide currently has no source that measures it.

What size solar system does a Toronto home need, and what does it cost?

Most residential quotes in Ontario land between 5 kW and 12 kW. Green Building Canada puts a 5 kW system at $12,000 to $17,500 and a 10 kW at $24,000 to $35,000 before incentives, and Solar Calculator Canada puts 8 kW at $19,400 to $28,000 and 12 kW at $29,000 to $42,000 before rebates. Solar Calculator Canada calls 8 kW the typical home size. Your roof area, shading and annual consumption set which one you need.

What permits and fees does a Toronto solar install need?

Three separate ones. An ESA Notification of Work filed by a licensed Electrical Contractor before work begins. A City of Toronto building permit for any solar collector system over 5 square metres, listed at $214.79 on Toronto's 2026 fee schedule, against a $244 residential minimum in Mississauga plus a $50 online administrative fee. And a connection impact assessment from your electricity distributor, which differs between Toronto Hydro, Alectra and Hydro One. We publish a figure only for the building permit: the ESA and utility amounts came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages, and we have not replaced them with an estimate.

Is HST included in Ontario solar quotes?

Often not. Xolar publishes its Ontario pricing of $2.10 to $4.10 per watt explicitly before HST, and Ontario HST is 13 percent. On a $25,000 system that is $3,250, so always confirm whether a quote is tax-in before comparing it with another.

Why do Toronto solar quotes vary so much for the same roof?

Mainly scope and system size. Green Building Canada puts a 5 kW system at $12,000 to $17,500 while Ontario installer Xolar quotes $19,100 to $20,300 for the same capacity, because fixed costs such as permits, ESA work and crew mobilisation do not shrink with a small array. Add-ons move the number too - a service entrance upgrade, tree work and snow-rated mounting are the usual three - and this guide no longer prices them, because the single source that did has deleted its Canadian pages.

Questions to ask your installer

  1. How old is the roof, and do you recommend redoing it before the array goes on?
  2. Which panels and inverters are you quoting, and how long is each separate warranty? What the equipment tiers cost
  3. Micro-inverters, optimisers or a string inverter for my shading, and why that one?
  4. Who files the building permit, the ESA notification and the utility connection application?
  5. What annual output does this design model, and what assumptions is that built on?

Which other costs should I check before I commit?
