How old can my roof be before it has to be redone first?

The honest rule is that panels should not go on a roof that will need replacing before they do. Panels last decades; asphalt shingles in this climate often do not. If your roof is past the halfway mark, expect a good installer to raise it rather than quietly build over it, because taking an array off and putting it back later costs real money. Say the roof age on the form and you will get straighter answers.

Will this actually cut my bill, and by how much?

That depends on your roof orientation and shading, how much power you use and when you use it, and the rate structure you are on, so a number quoted before anyone has looked at your bill is marketing rather than arithmetic. Give the installers your annual consumption and they can model it properly. We publish no savings figures on this site for the same reason.
