How Much Does Solar Roofing Cost in Toronto in 2026?

Last updated By The SolarPanelFinder Rooftop Desk

Roofing shows up in a solar quote in three ways. A roof with only a few years left is normally replaced before the array goes on, because taking panels off later costs more than doing it once. Mounting and flashing are priced per penetration or per array. Solar shingles are a roof and a generator in one product and are quoted per square foot.

Every row names its source

What does roof work around a solar array cost?

These solar roofing figures rest on 4 independent published sources across 14 rows. Each row quotes the sentence its own source used, and nothing here is an average of several.

Six scales, because a Toronto roof is quoted whole, quoted by the square foot, and for solar shingles quoted by generating capacity as well. The widest scale holds two conventional Toronto roofs, one complete solar shingle roof and three of the lines that sit inside those totals, so read the item name before you compare two bands on it.

Solar shingles measured by generating capacityStated as an average price per watt for solar shingles specifically, which the source places at the high end of the market because of the technology and the complex installation. Solar shingle roof, complete systemThe source writes the top of this band as '$70,000 and above', so the high figure is a floor, not a ceiling. It depends on house size and how much power is needed. Canada-wide, from an Edmonton roofing company.$25,000–$70,000per roof (CAD)A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada
New asphalt shingle roof, typical Toronto detached homeArchitectural asphalt shingles on a typical Toronto detached home, 2026. AUK Roofers' own quoted pricing, last reviewed 3 June 2026. Larger homes in Forest Hill, Rosedale and the Annex run $14,000-$26,000 and above; townhomes run $5,800-$9,200.$8,800–$16,500per roof, architectural shingles (CAD)AUK Roofers, New Roof Cost Toronto 2026
Architectural asphalt shingles, TorontoPer square foot installed. The source says this is 88% of the Toronto installs it does, so it is the default rather than one option among equals.$5.80–$7.80per sq ft installed (CAD)AUK Roofers, New Roof Cost Toronto 2026
Premium impact-resistant asphalt shingles, TorontoPer square foot installed, for impact-resistant designer asphalt. One Toronto roofer's own price, not a market survey.$7.80–$9.80per sq ft installed (CAD)AUK Roofers, New Roof Cost Toronto 2026
Standing-seam metal roof, TorontoPer square foot installed. The same list puts metal shingle at $11.50-$17.50 and synthetic slate at $14.50-$23, so standing seam is not the only metal option.$14–$23per sq ft installed (CAD)AUK Roofers, New Roof Cost Toronto 2026

Solar shingle installation labourThe labour line only, from the same Canada-wide breakdown whose total is $25,000-$70,000 and above.$5,000–$15,000per roof (CAD)A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada
Electrical system setup for a solar roofThe electrical line only, from the same Canada-wide breakdown. Separate from both the shingle material and the labour.$3,000–$10,000per roof (CAD)A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada
Conventional asphalt shingles, Canada, as a comparison baselineA comparison baseline, not a solar price. How the parts of this job fit together

A solar shingle roof, broken down the way the source that priced it broke it down

One Canadian breakdown gives the shingle material, the labour and the electrical setup as separate lines, and then a figure for the finished roof. All four are rows in the table above, which is why they can be stacked here without anything being added.

  • Solar shingle material

The material line only, priced by the square foot.

    $20–$35

per sq ft (CAD), A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada

  • Installation labour

The labour line only, from the same breakdown.

    $5,000–$15,000

per roof (CAD), A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada

  • Electrical system setup

Separate from both the shingle material and the labour.

    $3,000–$10,000

per roof (CAD), A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada

  • The complete solar shingle roof

The source writes the top of this band as a floor, not a ceiling.

    $25,000–$70,000

per roof (CAD), A2Z Roofing, Solar Roof Shingles Cost in Canada

The material line is priced per square foot and the other three per roof, so the column does not add up and is not meant to: the same roof is quoted in two units by the same source. Every figure here is Canada-wide, published by an Edmonton roofing company, and nothing on the pages this guide reads gives a Toronto solar shingle price.

What do the terms on this page mean?

Three words a solar roofing quote will use without explaining.

Solar shingle
A roofing product that is both the weather layer and the generator, unlike a panel mounted above an existing roof. It costs several times more per watt.
Architectural asphalt
The laminated asphalt shingle that is the default reroof in Toronto, accounting for 88 percent of installs at the roofer sourced on this page.
Plank decking
The spaced board sheathing under pre-1970 Toronto roofs. It generally needs full plywood replacement at reroof, which is an add on top of the roof price.

What drives the price?

Size, site access and the condition of what is already there move solar roofing pricing more than anything else in Toronto. Each factor below is drawn from the sources above, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • Roof area, since solar shingles at $20 to $35 per square foot scale directly with it
  • Whether the roof is being replaced anyway, because you can offset conventional roofing at $3 to $6 per square foot against a solar roof
  • Roof condition underneath, where plywood deck replacement on an older Toronto home is $4,200 to $8,800
  • House size, which moves a Toronto asphalt roof from $5,800 for a townhome to $26,000 for a large detached home
  • Material choice, from $5.80 per square foot for architectural asphalt to $14 to $23 for standing-seam metal to $20 to $35 for solar shingles
  • Electrical scope, at $3,000 to $10,000 for the electrical system on a solar roof
  • Snow rating on the mounting hardware, which is a real GTA line item and is cheaper specified at install than retrofitted

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

HST at 13 percent, an ESA Notification of Work filed before the job starts, and a municipal permit that differs city by city are the three Ontario rules that change the number on a quote. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle changes the specification.

  • The City of Toronto requires a building permit for PV installations larger than 5 square metres, with processing of about two to three weeks (SurgePV). Solar Energies in Canada lists the Toronto fee at $214.79 for a solar collector system over 5 square metres.
  • Roof-mounted solar in Ontario also needs an ESA permit filed as a Notification of Work by a licensed Electrical Contractor before work begins (SurgePV). The minimum residential notification fee is $88 (Electrical Safety Authority).
  • Ottawa and several other Ontario municipalities require the building permit specifically to confirm the roof structure can support the array weight (SurgePV), and rural municipalities vary, some with expedited processes for small residential systems.
  • Ontario HST is 13 percent. On a $16,500 Toronto roof that is $2,145, and on a $36,000 solar shingle roof it is $4,680.
  • Snow and freeze-thaw drive the mounting spec in the GTA, and snow-rated mounting hardware is cheaper to specify at install than to retrofit later. The add-on figure this guide used to publish came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages, so it has been removed and no substitute has been put in.
  • Solar shingles remain a niche product in Canada. Nothing on the pages we read gives a Toronto-specific solar shingle price, so the $20 to $35 per square foot figure is a Canadian one applied to a Toronto roof.

How can I pay less?

You can keep solar roofing costs down without cutting the parts that matter. These are the levers GTA homeowners actually use, each tied to a real number above.

  • Time the roof and the solar together. If the roof is within a few years of end of life, doing the reroof before the array avoids taking the panels off later - AUK Roofers puts a typical Toronto detached reroof at $8,800 to $16,500.
  • Only consider solar shingles when you are already reroofing. The offset is conventional roofing at $3 to $6 per square foot, and without it you are paying $20 to $35 per square foot against $5.80 to $7.80 for architectural asphalt.
  • Compare solar shingles per watt, not per square foot. At $4.00 to $7.50 per watt against $2.40 to $3.50 for panels, the same generation costs roughly double.
  • Get the deck inspected before quotes are final. Rotted sheathing found mid-job is the most common cost overrun on an older Toronto roof.
  • Ask for the electrical scope as its own line. A2Z Roofing puts electrical setup on a solar roof at $3,000 to $10,000, a spread wide enough to hide real differences between bids.
  • Confirm snow-rated mounting is included rather than added later, at $300 to $1,200.

How did we research these numbers?

Every solar roofing figure above was re-checked against its own source in August 2026: the number has to appear in that document, in a sentence about the same job, or the row came off. Here is what the 4 surviving sources say.

  • Solar shingles cost several times what a plain roof costs. Toronto architectural asphalt is $5.80 to $7.80 per square foot installed (AUK Roofers) while solar shingles run $20 to $35 per square foot in Canada (A2Z Roofing). EcoFlow Canada's figure of about $22 per square foot sits inside that band.
  • By generating capacity the premium is just as clear. Green Building Canada prices solar shingles at $4.00 to $7.50 per watt against $2.40 to $3.50 per watt for monocrystalline panels, and in its shingles guide says panels produce a watt for a little under $3 while tiles cost $4 to $7.
  • Head-to-head system comparisons disagree on the panel side, so treat the gap as a range. EcoFlow Canada puts a 6 kW solar shingle roof at roughly $36,000 against about $29,000 for a comparable panel system, while Green Building Canada compares the same $36,000 shingle roof against about $18,000 of panels. Either way the shingle roof is the more expensive path.
  • The fair comparison is not shingles versus panels, it is shingles versus a new roof plus panels. Solar shingles replace the roofing material, so you can subtract conventional roofing of $3 to $6 per square foot (EcoFlow Canada) from the total. That only helps if you were replacing the roof anyway.
  • Roof condition is the real variable on any solar project. AUK Roofers puts a new roof on a typical Toronto detached home at $8,800 to $16,500 and a plywood deck replacement on an older Toronto home at $4,200 to $8,800 on top of that, which only applies to plank-deck houses, generally pre-1970 construction.
  • Toronto roof pricing scales with the house rather than the material alone: $5,800 to $9,200 for a townhome, $8,800 to $16,500 for a typical detached home and $14,000 to $26,000 for larger homes in affluent areas, all in architectural asphalt (AUK Roofers).
  • Ontario winters show up in the mounting spec, and snow-rated mounting hardware is worth confirming is inside the quote rather than an extra. The add-on figure this guide used to publish came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages, so it has been removed and not replaced.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a solar roof cost in Toronto in 2026?

Solar roof shingles run $20 to $35 per square foot installed in Canada, or $25,000 to $70,000 for a complete system, according to A2Z Roofing. For comparison, a conventional architectural asphalt roof on a typical Toronto detached home is $8,800 to $16,500, or $5.80 to $7.80 per square foot.

Are solar shingles worth it compared with regular solar panels?

They cost roughly double per watt. Green Building Canada prices solar shingles at $4.00 to $7.50 per watt against $2.40 to $3.50 per watt for monocrystalline panels. On a 6 kW system EcoFlow Canada compares about $36,000 for shingles with about $29,000 for panels, while Green Building Canada compares the same $36,000 with about $18,000. Shingles make sense mainly when the roof is being replaced anyway.

Should I replace my roof before installing solar panels?

If it is anywhere near end of life, yes - doing the roof after the array is up means paying for a removal and reinstall on top. AUK Roofers, a Toronto roofer quoting its own 2026 prices, puts a new roof on a typical Toronto detached home at $8,800 to $16,500 with architectural asphalt shingles, and a larger home in Rosedale, Forest Hill or Lawrence Park at $14,000 and above. An older Toronto roof may also need plywood deck replacement at $4,200 to $8,800 on top of that.

What does a new roof cost in Toronto?

AUK Roofers puts architectural asphalt at $5.80 to $7.80 per square foot installed, which works out to $5,800 to $9,200 for a townhome, $8,800 to $16,500 for a typical detached home and $14,000 to $26,000 for larger homes. Premium impact-resistant asphalt is $7.80 to $9.80 per square foot and standing-seam metal is $14 to $23, or $19,500 to $36,000 for the whole project.

Do I need a building permit for roof-mount solar in Toronto?

Yes for anything over 5 square metres, which covers almost any real array. Toronto processing takes about two to three weeks and Solar Energies in Canada lists the fee at $214.79. You also need an ESA Notification of Work filed by a licensed Electrical Contractor, with a minimum residential fee of $88.

Does snow affect what I pay for solar roofing in the GTA?

It affects the mounting spec more than the roof. Snow-rated mounting hardware is a real line on a GTA quote, and some Ontario municipalities require the building permit specifically so the structure can be checked against the array weight. We no longer publish a price for the hardware: the source that carried it has deleted its Canadian pages, so ask your installer to show it as its own line.

Questions to ask your installer

  1. Is the roof sound enough to carry the array for its full service life?
  2. Who flashes the mounts, and who is liable if a penetration leaks later?
  3. Does the mounting hardware affect the roofing manufacturer's warranty?
  4. If the roof needs replacing later, what does taking the array off and putting it back cost? Removal and reinstall pricing
  5. Are you doing both trades, or coordinating with a separate solar company?

Which other costs should I check before I commit?
