How Much Does Solar Panel Repair and Maintenance Cost in Toronto?

Last updated By The SolarPanelFinder Rooftop Desk

An illustration, not a photograph of a real job. The photographs further down this page are real, and each one is published by the company that took it.
Professional solar maintenance service, Canada
$150–$400per year (CAD): Professional solar maintenance service, Canada (Green Building Canada, Solar Panels Cost in Canada (updated 14 Jan 2026))
Ongoing operations and maintenance, larger arrays
0.2%–1%of system cost per year (CAD): Ongoing operations and maintenance, larger arrays (Green Building Canada, What Commercial Solar Panels Cost in Canada 2026)
Inverter replacement, needed every 10 to 15 years
10%–15%of system cost (CAD): Inverter replacement, needed every 10 to 15 years (Green Building Canada, What Commercial Solar Panels Cost in Canada 2026)

Service work on an existing array is priced per visit or per job rather than per kilowatt. A diagnostic call to trace an underproducing string is the usual starting point, and the fix is quoted after it. Inverter replacement is the single largest line most owners meet, and a full removal and reinstall is charged separately when the roof underneath needs work.

Every row names its source

What does each solar service job cost in the GTA?

These solar panel repair and maintenance figures rest on 2 independent published sources across 3 rows. Each row quotes the sentence its own source used, and nothing here is an average of several.

One of the three rows in the table above is a dollar figure. The other two are stated by their own source as a percentage of system cost, so there is no dollar scale they belong on. That is the published state of Canadian solar repair pricing, and this page shows the one band it can rather than filling the gap.

2 rows are in the table above but not on any scale here. A band can only be drawn where a source published a plain dollar figure at both ends. These did not, and rounding them into one would publish a number nobody published:

  • Ongoing operations and maintenance, larger arrays (0.2% to 1%) is stated as a percentage of system cost, not a dollar amount.
  • Inverter replacement, needed every 10 to 15 years (10% to 15%) is stated as a percentage of system cost, not a dollar amount.

How the parts of this job fit together

Two clocks run on a solar array, and only one of them bills every year

The three published figures on this page do not describe one bill. One is an annual service and two describe equipment that is replaced once or twice in the life of the system, so reading them as a single running cost overstates it badly.

  1. On a yearly clock

charged every year the array runs

    • Professional maintenance service

The replacement interval comes from the same sentence as the cost.

    • The panels themselves, usually not

Inverters are replaced on that interval and panels usually are not.

    • Whatever the warranty still covers

Ontario installs are commonly sold with 25-year warranties, so check before paying for a diagnosis.

This is the thinnest guide on the site and the diagram says why: two of its three published figures are percentages of system cost taken from a commercial solar guide, so neither can be read as a house-sized number and neither is drawn on the dollar scale above.

What do the terms on this page mean?

Three words a solar panel repair and maintenance quote will use without explaining.

Operations and maintenance
The recurring cost of keeping an array producing: cleaning, inspection and inverter servicing. On this page it is quoted as a percentage of system cost per year, and the sources for it are commercial rather than residential.
Inverter
The unit converting the array's DC output into the AC your house uses. It is the component that fails first, typically needing replacement every 10 to 15 years.
Removal and reinstall
Taking an array off a roof and putting it back, which a roof replacement forces. No Canadian source we could find publishes a per-panel rate for it.

What drives the price?

Size, site access and the condition of what is already there move solar panel repair and maintenance pricing more than anything else in Toronto. Each factor below is drawn from the sources above, so you can read a quote and see where the money goes.

  • What actually failed, since an inverter is 10 to 15 percent of system cost while a loose connection is a service visit
  • System age, because inverters are replaced every 10 to 15 years and panels usually are not
  • Whether the work is still under warranty, as Ontario installs are commonly sold with 25-year warranties (Solar Calculator Canada)
  • Roof access, height and pitch, which set how long a crew is on site
  • Whether the array has to come off for roof work, which is a second mobilisation on top of a roof that AUK Roofers prices at $8,800 to $16,500 for a typical Toronto detached home
  • Shading that has grown in since the install, where tree work is priced by the arborist rather than the solar company
  • System size, since ongoing operations and maintenance scales at 0.2 to 1 percent of system cost per year

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

HST at 13 percent, an ESA Notification of Work filed before the job starts, and a municipal permit that differs city by city are the three Ontario rules that change the number on a quote. Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle changes the specification.

  • Repairs that touch the wiring are electrical work under Ontario law and must be filed with the Electrical Safety Authority by a licensed Electrical Contractor. The minimum fee for a residential ESA notification is $88 (Electrical Safety Authority), and ESA wiring and licensing fees rose 1.9 percent effective 1 April 2026 (SurgePV).
  • Ontario HST is 13 percent and applies to service labour, so a $400 maintenance visit is about $452 all in.
  • Ontario rainfall does most of the panel cleaning, which is why Canadian maintenance guidance sits at $150 to $400 a year while dry-climate US guides quote per-panel cleaning schedules. Snow slides off tilted panels on its own in most GTA installations.
  • Warranty matters more than the repair price. Ontario installer pricing of $2.42 to $3.50 per watt is quoted as including 25-year warranties (Solar Calculator Canada), so check what is still covered before paying for a diagnosis.
  • If a repair changes the system's capacity or its connection, the local distribution company has to be involved again. Ontario's roughly 60 LDCs each administer their own net metering connection (SurgePV).

How can I pay less?

You can keep solar panel repair and maintenance costs down without cutting the parts that matter. These are the levers GTA homeowners actually use, each tied to a real number above.

  • Check the warranty before booking a diagnosis. Ontario systems are commonly sold with 25-year warranties, and an inverter failure inside its term should not cost you 10 to 15 percent of system cost.
  • Watch your monitoring app instead of buying inspections. A production drop against last year is the cheapest fault detector you have, and it costs nothing.
  • Skip routine cleaning unless production says otherwise. Canadian guidance puts total maintenance at $150 to $400 a year precisely because Ontario rain does the work.
  • Budget for the inverter from day one. At 10 to 15 percent of system cost every 10 to 15 years, it is a known expense, not a surprise.
  • Deal with the roof and the array in one project. If the roof is close to end of life, doing the roofing before or alongside the solar work avoids paying a crew twice - AUK Roofers puts a typical Toronto detached reroof at $8,800 to $16,500.
  • Trim overhanging branches early. Shading damages production more than dirt does, and tree work is almost always cheaper than years of lost output. We no longer publish a price for it: the source that carried one has deleted its Canadian pages.
  • Get the price in writing before the truck arrives, since the Toronto solar service companies we checked do not publish rate cards.

How did we research these numbers?

Every solar panel repair and maintenance figure above was re-checked against its own source in August 2026: the number has to appear in that document, in a sentence about the same job, or the row came off. Here is what the 2 surviving sources say.

  • This is the thinnest pricing topic on the site, and we would rather say so than fill the table. We read the service pages of Solar Power Toronto and Ontario-wide GreenEnerCanada in August 2026. Neither publishes a dollar price. Both ask you to request a quote, so there is no Toronto rate card to report.
  • Most published repair numbers in search results are American. We excluded them. US per-panel removal rates, US truck-roll fees and US diagnostic charges do not translate to Toronto labour, and putting them in a table would make the page look precise while being wrong.
  • What Canadian sources do publish is the shape of the cost rather than the invoice. Green Building Canada gives $150 to $400 a year for professional maintenance nationally, and puts ongoing operations and maintenance on larger arrays at 0.2 to 1 percent of system cost per year.
  • Inverters are the one component you should plan to replace. Green Building Canada puts replacement at 10 to 15 percent of system cost every 10 to 15 years. GreenEnerCanada, an Ontario service company, gives a consistent figure of around 10 percent of your total system price. On a $25,000 array that is roughly $2,500 to $3,750.
  • Panels themselves rarely fail. They have no moving parts, and Ontario rainfall handles most of the cleaning that drier climates pay for, which is why annual maintenance sits in the low hundreds rather than the thousands.
  • The largest predictable cost is not a repair at all, it is the roof: an array on a roof that reaches end of life has to come off and go back on. AUK Roofers, a Toronto roofer publishing its own 2026 prices, puts a new roof on a typical Toronto detached home at $8,800 to $16,500 with architectural asphalt shingles. The roof-replacement figure this guide used to quote came from a source that has deleted its Canadian pages and has been removed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does solar panel repair cost in Toronto?

The Toronto solar service companies we checked do not publish prices. Solar Power Toronto and Ontario-wide GreenEnerCanada both quote on request as of August 2026. What Canadian sources do publish is the running cost: $150 to $400 a year for professional maintenance, and 0.2 to 1 percent of system cost per year in ongoing operations and maintenance on larger arrays.

What does it cost to replace a solar inverter in Ontario?

Expect 10 to 15 percent of your system's cost, according to Green Building Canada, which also puts replacement frequency at every 10 to 15 years. Ontario service company GreenEnerCanada gives a similar figure of around 10 percent of total system price. On a $25,000 array that is roughly $2,500 to $3,750.

How much should I budget each year to maintain solar panels in the GTA?

$150 to $400 a year covers professional maintenance in Canada, per Green Building Canada. For larger arrays the equivalent figure is 0.2 to 1 percent of system cost per year. Ontario rainfall handles most of the cleaning that drier climates pay for, so routine washing is rarely worth buying.

Do I have to remove solar panels to replace my roof?

Yes, and that is the expensive part of the job. AUK Roofers puts a new roof on a typical Toronto detached home at $8,800 to $16,500 with architectural asphalt shingles, and the array has to come off and go back on around it. We could not find a Canadian source that publishes a per-panel removal and reinstall rate, so ask your installer for that line in writing rather than trusting US per-panel figures.

Does a solar repair need an ESA permit in Ontario?

Any repair touching the wiring is electrical work and is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority by a licensed Electrical Contractor. The minimum fee for a residential notification is $88, and ESA wiring and licensing fees rose 1.9 percent effective 1 April 2026.

Why are there so few published solar repair prices for Toronto?

Because the work is diagnostic. Until a technician knows whether the fault is a $88-notification wiring fix or an inverter replacement at 10 to 15 percent of system cost, there is no meaningful list price. Most search results that do quote firm repair numbers are American, and we left them out rather than pass off US labour rates as Toronto pricing.

Questions to ask your installer

  1. Is the diagnostic fee credited against the repair if I go ahead? Service call pricing
  2. Do you service my inverter brand, and can you still source parts for it?
  3. Is this fault covered by a manufacturer warranty, and will you file that claim?
  4. What does a removal and reinstall involve on my system if the roof needs work? Removal and reinstall costs
  5. Do I get a written report with the readings, not just a verbal summary?

Which other costs should I check before I commit?
