Where the GTA's solar companies cluster

What 161 records look like laid out on a map

This website lists 59 areas throughout the Greater Toronto Area: 41 neighbourhoods, 11 cities and 7 districts. It contains 161 solar companies. Those two figures do not divide evenly, and the pattern of the mismatch is what matters.

A direct count of the records shows Mississauga has 18 companies, Markham 15 and Willowdale 14. That puts 47 of the 161 records in three locations. Next come Oakville with 9, Islington-City Centre and Brampton with 8 each, and five areas hold 7 apiece: Harbourfront, the Financial District, Vaughan, Scarborough Town Centre and Richmond Hill. King West and Leaside hold 4 each.

Out of the 59 areas, at least one company is present in Thirty-six of them. No area appears on Seven records, generally where the listing lacks a street address that we were able to locate.

The absence is a finding, not a gap in the data

Of the 59 areas this site lists, twenty-three have no solar company at all. Downtown Toronto, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Yorkville, High Park, Riverdale, the Danforth, Rosedale, Forest Hill, Cabbagetown, Kensington Market, Little Italy, Parkdale, Roncesvalles, Trinity Bellwoods, the Kingsway, Bloor West Village, Davisville, Lawrence Park, CityPlace, Corktown, the Distillery District and Midtown at Yonge and Eglinton are among them.

That list covers the older, denser core, mostly residential. Solar companies locate where a business can keep a yard, a warehouse and a fleet of vans, which is why Mississauga has 18 and Downtown Toronto has zero.

A company's registered address is not the same thing as its service area, and that difference is what the blank areas actually reveal. A firm based in Mississauga will still price a roof in Riverdale. The gaps show you where the truck will likely start from, not whether it will arrive at all. If you are in one of those 23 areas, the areas index points to nearby pages with companies, and the full company list is the option that sets location aside completely.

What the ratings do and do not say

Of the 161 companies in this index, 90 have ratings. The remaining seventy-one have none. For that 90-company sample, the average rating is 4.61, the middle value is 5, and scores span 1.7 to 5.

Averages per area carry that same weakness and amplify it. Across the Financial District's 7 companies the average is 3.65, the lowest concentration average in the index. Brampton's 8 and Scarborough Town Centre's 7 both sit at 5. King West's 4 come to 4.9, Willowdale's 14 to 4.76 and Mississauga's 18 to 4.03. Each of those numbers depends on a single-digit or low-double-digit sample taken from the 90 companies that hold any rating at all, and the figures built on 4 companies measure nothing.

The review totals beneath them are just as lopsided. The 90 rated firms share 3,646 reviews overall. Half of them carry under ten. One holds 790. An average calculated across that range reflects the outliers, and we state the sample size in that same sentence each time for that reason. The methodology page explains what this site does and does not claim to know about a company.

Seventy-one companies with no rating are still companies

A shortlist based only on stars quietly drops 71 of the 161 records shown here. That is not filtering. It is a coin toss tilted by how long a business has spent asking customers for reviews.

What a record without a rating still shows is what the record itself holds. In this index 149 of 161 companies list a phone number, 133 list a website, 151 list an address and 157 list coordinates. Not one lists an email address. Those are checkable facts about a business, and none of them depends on whether anyone has left a review.

What this record cannot show is licensing, warranty conditions, years of operation, or whether work was completed on schedule. The index keeps no such data for any of its 161 companies, and no score stands in for it.

The category counts are the market's real shape

Of the 161 companies, 143 say they install solar panels. Twenty cover commercial solar, 16 cover battery storage, 5 cover solar electrical work, 4 cover repair and maintenance, 4 cover solar roofing, 3 cover off-grid solar and 3 cover design and consulting. A company can appear in several categories, so the counts add up to more than the index total.

Google's own business categories recount a similar tale. Out of 161, 115 are tagged as a solar energy company, 15 as a solar energy system service, 7 as a solar energy equipment supplier, 6 as an electrician, 4 as a roofing contractor, 3 as an energy equipment and solutions business, and one each as a solar panel maintenance service, an engineering consultant, an electrical installation service, a lighting contractor and a corporate office.

Two issues stand out. Seven of these entries are equipment suppliers, not contractors, so a supplier's star rating tells you nothing about installation quality. And the categories with the highest GTA demand, including repair and maintenance, are nearly empty. Repair and maintenance lists four companies. Installation lists 143.

What geography does to price

The location of the company itself shifts the price less than the location of the roof. SolarCalculatorHQ's 2026 regional table places installed residential solar in the GTA at $2.95 to $3.30 per watt, compared with $2.80 to $3.10 in southwestern Ontario and $2.85 to $3.15 in the east, and points to labour rates and ESA inspection demand as the reason for the gap.

That is a regional band, and it covers a Mississauga company working on a Toronto roof just as much as a Toronto one. Ontario-wide averages run a bit lower: Solar Calculator Canada lists $2.42 to $3.50 per watt and Solar Energies in Canada lists $2.40 to $3.50. The installation cost guide lays out those bands with the system sizes attached.

The practical step is to cost each proposal by the watt and compare it to the GTA range, which the quote checklist covers along with the extras that fall outside it. Searching for a contractor in a cheaper postal code does not change that figure.

How to use a company's address without over-reading it

Treat the address as a fact about logistics. A company 40 kilometres away is more likely to add a travel charge, take longer to come back for a warranty call, and be less reliable to pin to a schedule in February. That is the honest weight to give it.

Do not read it as a limit on where they work or a mark of quality. The index places every business in the region its own listing names, and that is all. The 23 blank regions have no addresses on file, not no service.

The workable approach is compact. Find three firms from the closest zones that genuinely carry them, call to verify they service your location, and check the per-watt figures you receive. Since 149 of 161 companies answer by phone and 133 through their sites, gathering three comparable proposals is an achievable goal across nearly the whole region.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of the GTA has the most solar companies?

Mississauga leads by a clear margin. Out of the 161 records in this index, Mississauga contains 18 companies, Markham 15 and Willowdale 14. After those, Oakville has 9, Islington-City Centre and Brampton have 8 each, and Harbourfront, the Financial District, Vaughan, Scarborough Town Centre and Richmond Hill have 7 apiece. The deeper supply sits in the suburbs, not the downtown core.

There is no solar company listed in my neighbourhood. What does that mean?

It shows that no business in this directory lists that neighbourhood as its registered address, and 23 of the 59 areas on this site are in the same situation. It does not mean no one will come. A business address is not the same as a service area, and a company based in Mississauga or Markham may well quote across the whole region. Ask about coverage on the first call instead of reading absence as refusal.

Is the average rating a fair way to compare areas?

Only with the sample size attached. Of the 161 companies in this index, 90 have ratings, so every area average depends on a subset of the companies in it, and some of those subsets are tiny. The Financial District's 7 companies average 3.65 while Brampton's 8 average 5, but both numbers rest on single-digit samples and neither measures workmanship.

Does where the company is based change what I pay?

Your location matters more than the installer's location. SolarCalculatorHQ's 2026 regional table lists the GTA at $2.95 to $3.30 per watt installed, compared with $2.80 to $3.10 in southwestern Ontario and $2.85 to $3.15 in the east, and credits the difference to labour rates and ESA inspection demand. That gap is regional, not tied to a specific company, and it also applies to a Mississauga installer doing work in Toronto.

How many solar companies are there in the Greater Toronto Area in total?

This index contains 161 entries spread over 59 areas and 8 service categories, which reflects what we can count, not what is out there. Among those 161, 143 list panel installation, 20 list commercial solar, 16 list battery storage, 5 list solar electrical work, 4 list repair and maintenance, 4 list solar roofing, 3 list off-grid work and 3 list design and consulting. A company may appear in more than one category, so those figures add up to more than 161.
